Ravens Strengthen Secondary

Last night the Ravens completed a trade with the Seattle Seahawks to bring former Maryland Terrapin Josh Wilson (CB) back to the area to sure up their injury-plagued secondary.  With Dominique Foxworth out for the season with a knee injury and two other CB’s coming back from knee injuries (Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb) this move should help to bolster the secondary as well as add a weapon on special teams as Wilson was an accomplished kick returner in Seattle.

You can take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with him by watching this highlight video:

Though I remember Wilson from when he was at Maryland and when he was drafted I haven’t followed his career much over the past few years, which seems to happen with many players who get drafted by the Seahawks and head up to the Pacific Northwest.

He’s started 12 games at corner in each of the past 2 seasons collecting 6 interceptions, 3 of which were returned for touchdowns. At only 5’9″ his size leaves a bit to be desired as the Ravens will go up against some teams with large receiving corps, but a guy with this much experience should be an immediate improvement over some of the players we’ve been using at CB this preseason.

Also, by only giving up a fourth or fifth round pick we’ve acquired someone with the ability to contribute right away without taking much away from our current or future teams. Some of the comments on Pro Football Talk last night read:

“Wowwwww We just worked over the Seattle front office!!!! HAHAHAHA love you Oz!”

“Great Seattle.. Give up more of your decent players while u rebuild… Lol Pete Carroll is gonna make you implode”

“This is truly a surprising move, Josh was the Hawks best corner last year and they traded him for a FIFTH??? WOW just WOW!!!”

This was the general sentiment on PFT but we’ll have to wait and see when he steps on the field to see if this deal lives up to everyone’s early expectations.
