The Pool at Druid Hill Park: Not Daddy’s Country Club

Young people at Druid Hill Park enjoying the water

As a red white and blue blooded American I spent the Fourth of July soaking up rays, chlorine, and lite beer.   Before I went to the sickest FOJ party (a term new to me this year) that I’ve ever attended on an RTD in Fed Hill, I went with LadyHipster and Hamsterdam to the pool at Druid Hill Park.   I’ve always seen the pool and its festive atmosphere while riding my cycle or playing tennis at Druid Hill Park, but had never screwed up the courage to go to the public swimming pool there.  I will be going back, and updating you, reader, on my trips to the other public pools this summer.

Let this entry serve as a kind of guide to the pool experience at Druid Hill Park, as we clearly stood out there because we didn’t know the rules and regs of the place.  You “queue up” at the front desk and pay your “yearly dues” (for the country club set).  Entry was $1.50 for the day, which comes out to %26,666 cheaper than a country club.   There was fairly strict security, particularly in the women’s locker room, where one had to relinquish all possessions to a guarded wall of cubbies (all items were returned).   The worst part of the whole deal was walking through a few centimeters of standing water and praying that my freshman year of college athlete’s foot wouldn’t return.   Let me say this, bring some shower shoes.   We were instructed to do a “warm-up” fitness assessment, which involved two short laps. We all passed.  We then watched some chiseled lifelike statues freestyle dive to the glee of the spectators.   Apollo jealously brooded in the corner while Michelangelo took notes.

Good vibes abounded and children laughed and splashed, though there was certainly ample room for all to enjoy the water which was nice but not altogether pee-warmed.   For the price this place cannot be topped.  Tune in next time for the Roosevelt Park pool in Hamden.

Are you insinuating that the water would have been more pleasant with a higher urine concentration?

As a public pool the low price made sense. Anyway Druid Hill Park rocks is a great historic place! Hope to hear more when you visit Roosevelt Park pool. Thanks!
